National Units of Competency

  • UETDRMP005 – Perform Elevated Work Platform Rescue
  • UETDRMP004 – Perform Controlled Descent Escape

Overview and Purpose

This course equips Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) workers with the skills and knowledge to safely conduct a rescue from an elevated work platform (EWP) and perform a controlled descent escape. Participants will learn to meet strict WHS/OHS requirements, with a focus on the correct inspection and use of EWP retrieval systems.

The training is tailored for those involved in high-access operations within the ESI and Electrotechnology sectors and supports compliance with industry mobility and mutual aid protocols.

Entry Requirements

To enrol, students must provide evidence of completion for the following units prior to attending:

  • HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
    and one of the following:
  • UEECD0007 – Apply WHS regulations, codes and practices

Operate Elevating Work Platform - 1 day

National Unit of Competency

  • RIIHAN301E – Operate Elevating Work Platform

Overview and Purpose

This one-day training course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to operate various types of Elevating Work Platforms (EWPs) safely and effectively. Training is aligned with the nationally recognised “Yellow Card” program developed by the Elevating Work Platform Association of Australia (EWPA).

Participants can be trained and assessed in one or more of the following EWP machine types, depending on the equipment used in their workplace:

  • VL – Vertical Lift
  • SL – Scissor Lift
  • BL – Self-Propelled Boom Lift
  • TL – Trailer Mounted Boom Lift
  • TM – Truck Mounted Boom Lift

Why This Training Matters

Under the WHS Act 2011 (Division 2: 19.3), employers have a legal duty to provide appropriate training and instruction to minimise risks to workers' health and safety. The Yellow Card program helps employers and operators meet these obligations where a high-risk work licence is not required.

Important Note:
If operating a boom-type EWP with a reach of 11 metres or more, you are legally required to hold a National Licence to Perform High Risk Work – Class WP, issued by your state or territory’s WHS regulator.

Course Content Includes:

  • Identifying hazards and assessing risks
  • Proper inspection and use of fall arrest harnesses
  • Understanding machine specifications via data plates and manuals
  • Conducting thorough pre- and post-operational checks
  • Safe operation of selected EWP types
  • Responding to emergencies and implementing rescue procedures
  • Theory-based assessment and hands-on competency demonstration

Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Training in Australia

Why EWP Training Matters

Whether you're operating a boom lift, scissor lift, or vertical lift, working at height on an Elevated Work Platform (EWP) carries serious risk. According to Safe Work Australia, falls from height remain one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities, with mobile platforms involved in a significant number of these incidents. In response, strict regulations now require that all operators of EWPs be properly trained and certified.

EWP training is essential not just for safety—but also for compliance. Anyone operating a boom-type EWP with a reach of over 11 metres must hold a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). For platforms under 11 metres, a nationally recognised competency (such as RIIHAN301E) is typically required by employers to meet WHS obligations.

Elevated Work Platform Training FAQs

What is an Elevated Work Platform (EWP)?

An EWP is any powered platform used to lift personnel, tools, or equipment to heights. This includes boom lifts, scissor lifts, cherry pickers, and vertical lifts.

Is EWP training mandatory in Australia?
Yes. Under Australian WHS law:
  • A High Risk Work Licence (WP class) is required for boom-type EWPs over 11 metres in height.
  • For under 11 metres, employers must ensure staff are trained and competent—often through courses like RIIHAN301E – Operate elevating work platform.

What does EWP training cover?

Training typically includes:

  • Pre-operational checks and hazard identification
  • Safe operation and manoeuvring of EWP equipment
  • Emergency procedures and fall protection
  • Ground support and exclusion zones
  • Working around powerlines and other site-specific risks
How long does EWP training take?
  • Under 11m EWP training usually takes one day
  • High Risk Work Licence training can take two to three days, including assessment
How long is EWP training valid?
  • High Risk Work Licences are valid for 5 years.
  • National competency statements (like RIIHAN301E) don’t technically expire but should be refreshed every 2 years to stay compliant with best practice
How much does EWP training cost in Australia?

Prices typically range from $300 to $750, depending on:

  • The type of licence or competency
  • Course duration
  • Whether it includes assessment for HRWL
  • Location and group size
