Gas Monitoring/Analyst Personnel

Gas Monitoring is Essential for Safety

Protecting Workers from Invisible Hazards

Toxic gases. Oxygen deficiency. Explosive atmospheres.
These hazards are silent, fast-moving — and deadly.

In Australia, confined spaces and hazardous worksites continue to cause serious injuries and fatalities every year, often due to the failure to detect dangerous gases in time. According to Safe Work Australia, atmospheric risks contribute to a significant portion of confined space deaths, with workers sometimes rendered unconscious after just a few breaths.

That’s why real-time, reliable gas monitoring isn’t optional — it’s life-critical.

At Zokal, we deliver comprehensive gas monitoring solutions to safeguard workers in the harshest environments, ensuring compliance with Australian Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations and industry best practice.

Confined Space Rescue

Confined spaces can be the most hazardous work environments. Zokal provides trained confined space sentries, rescue technicians, and full compliance with WHS Regulations, ensuring entry is controlled, monitored, and backed by a rescue plan.

Gas Monitoring Services

Toxic atmospheres are invisible threats. Zokal provides real-time gas detection, equipment hire, calibration, and atmospheric testing to protect your workforce from oxygen depletion, combustible gases, and other airborne hazards.

Why Gas Monitoring is Essential

Many workplaces — particularly confined spaces such as tanks, pits, silos, tunnels, and pipes — pose hidden atmospheric risks that cannot be detected by sight, smell, or touch.

The most common dangers include:

  • Oxygen Deficiency:
Air with less than 19.5% oxygen can cause dizziness, unconsciousness, or death in minutes.
  • Toxic Gases:
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia, and other gases can poison workers at extremely low concentrations.
  • Flammable or Explosive Gases:
Methane (CH₄), propane, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can ignite from a simple spark if concentrations are above the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL).
  • Oxygen Enrichment:
Too much oxygen (>23.5%) can turn a small spark into an uncontrollable fire hazard.

Without accurate atmospheric monitoring, workers may unknowingly step into deadly environments — with little or no chance of escape.

NSW WHS Regulations on Gas Monitoring

In New South Wales, under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulation 2017, businesses must:

  • Conduct Air Monitoring
If there is uncertainty about airborne contaminant levels, employers must monitor the atmosphere to ensure it is safe for workers.

  • Confined Space Entry Permits
Require documented atmospheric testing before and during entry operations.
  • Limit Exposure to Hazardous Substances
Ensure that any airborne contaminants do not exceed the national exposure standards published by Safe Work Australia.
  • Maintain Gas Detection Equipment
Ensure gas monitors are properly calibrated, maintained, and appropriate for the intended hazard.

Failing to comply can lead to significant penalties — and far worse, serious harm to workers.
